The Essence of Christmas

It’s the time of the year again December has come but have we ever ask ourselves what is the real truth about Christmas? Is it about exchanging of gifts, Santa Claus, Christmas trees, Christmas carols, parties, greeting cards, decorations, family and friends gathering or the birth of Jesus Christ our Savior? Is this really Christmas?

Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of Christ. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born and to save us from all our sins. His birth brought great joy to the world. Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us and it’s a time to celebrate and to remember how great Gods love for us that he gave Jesus into the world to redeem us from our transgressions. Isn’t wonderful? We celebrate Christmas not because of Santa Claus etc. we celebrate it because of Jesus the only son of God… Christmas is all about Him!

Yes Christmas isn't really the date of Jesus birth. No one knew the real date, even Rudolph, Santa Claus and Christmas tree do not appear anywhere in the Bible but that’s not important anyway as long as we celebrate Christmas because we want to give glory and praise to our Wonderful Savior for coming into the world.

Nowadays, some people misunderstood the real meaning of Christmas. Yes, it supposed to be meaningful event but for them it is the time of the year when they think they are obliged to give gifts to almost everyone. But there are still some who haven't forgotten the real meaning of Christmas... They celebrate it because it is the birth of Christ... They celebrate with the people they love by sharing or giving not just material things but love & appreciation and of course by spending quality time with loved ones…

I remember when I was a child when I discovered there is no Santa Claus but the one who give gifts inside my stocking were my parents. I also remember a time we would draw each other's names out of a box in our grade school classrooms, and each pupil was encouraged to buy a gift for the one whose name was drawn. I still remember the feeling of excitement and full of expectation about what gift I would receive when we had our classroom "Christmas party," only to discover a handkerchief and a hair comb. I was really disappointed!

You see, even before there are a lot of things I also misunderstood about Christmas. I thought its all about exchanging gifts, that Christmas would be useless without receiving any presents until I get to know the real meaning by myself… Yes now I can say that LOVE is really the essence of Christmas and that love was Jesus himself…

Look at Christmas in a meaningful way this year.

The Pinoy Media Congress - sponsored by ABS-CBN

Recently my classmates and I attended Pinoy Media Congress at Miriam College which participated by different Colleges and Universities all over the Philippines. There were almost a thousand student and faculty representatives at the Congress. It's been a privilege in my part to be a part of this two-day event seminar (Nov 27-28) which promises a lively and productive dialogue among students and respected media practitioners on various aspects of media and relevant topics that would help youth, particularly Mass Communication student like me who will be future media practitioner.
The mission of the event I supposed is to give fruitful sharing of knowledge, information, critical thinking and instilled the awareness of the students but it turned out to be ABS-CBN propaganda event. From ABS-CBN executives to all the heads of the company focused more on image building rather sharing information that would help student in their future career.
Its good thing to gather students from many different Schools in the country but this event shouldn’t be used as another venue for PR. It should not be bound to just mere image building instead of sharing their views on various media platforms, techniques and skills. What matters most is that it should give the needs of the students and not just bragging their achievements and simply build up or boast the reputation of the company
I remember one student from UE who asked the panel regarding School discrimination. Then everybody roared in applause. I can’t help but think if this is true or just merely rumors. But of course when you mention prestigious schools such as UP, Ateneo, La Salle and UST you cannot deny the fact that they prioritize these schools compare to less known schools.

I was also surprised with one of the professor because of his sarcastic and straightforward question. I think he is not asking his debating… Like his question directed to Regina Lopez and Karen Davila with raising his voice regarding their issues in programming. He his asking for values in terms of ABS-CBN programs but he himself don’t act like one. But I admire Karen Davila who calmly and intelligently answered back. She answered like this “If you hate the program, why were you watching it?” I agree with her it’s because we have an option either to switch on or off the TV right?
I hope the next Pinoy Media Congress will focus more in the needs of the students as the future media practitioners and potential leaders…

Try and Try

I have always seen life for what it really is.
Ever since I was a child growing up, hard times are all I know.
I had to sit back and watch my mother work from sunset to sundown.
I had to sit back and watch my mother work herself to her grave.
Nothing ever came easy for her.
She always had a heart and kept a smile on her face.
Life is like a newborn baby struggling to come out of its mother's womb,
life is a struggle true enough, but after all the struggling you have done,
and after all the hell you have been through, there is success.
Life is nothing but a big struggle, but just keep the faith and focus on your goals.
Don't let life beat you or you will be walking around like zombies.
Keep on pushing, keep on trying, life can be whatever you make it to be.
But life can also be a bowl of cherries with whip cream and apple pie.
I say this again; life is what you make of it.
You can achieve or conquer anything it throws at you, you can't quit or give up,
you have got to keep on working, look higher some way,
some how you are going to make it.
