PROCLAMATION RALLY OF TEAM UNITY

Last Tuesday we attended the Proclamation Rally of TEAM Unity at the Bren Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

The administration, led by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo together with the Vice President Noli de Castro, came in full force in support of TEAM Unity candidates at the proclamation rally here in Pampanga. Also present were local officials led by Pampanga Governor Mark Lapid, Representative Juan Miguel Arroyo, and Senator Lito Lapid.

Arroyo appealed to her province mates to vote for all 12 senatorial candidates of TEAM Unity. The President, speaking in Kapampangan, urged her province mates to support her candidates, so that they in turn could help develop the province.

I noticed that all tried to inject humor in their lines and most of the candidates would greet the crowd, but only to proved to be experts of the local dialect. They are all claiming that they have a Kapampangan blood, that his relatives, wife are from the same province etc… which sounds like telling the people to vote for them just because they are also have a blood of Kapampangan. The candidates will, instead, focus on explaining their platforms to the people.

Packed meals from a popular fast food chain were distributed to those who went to the rally. Some barangay officials said Governor Lapid provided the meals.

TEAM Unity is composed of reelectionist Senators Edgardo Angara, Joker Arroyo and Ralph Recto; Arroyo's former chief of staff Michael Defensor; Governors Luis Singson of Ilocos Sur and Vicente Magsaysay of Zambales; congressmen Prospero Pichay of Surigao del Sur and Juan Miguel Zubiri of Bukidnon; former senators Teresa Aquino-Oreta and Tito Sotto, and Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III.

In the administration’s Team Unity, there some unanswered questions. What are Senators Joker Arroyo and Ralph Recto, who spent most of their time in the Senate criticizing the government of Arroyo doing in the Team Unity line-up. Also Senator Edgardo Angara, former Executive Secretary of President Estrada and former Senators Tessie Aquino Oreta and Tito Sotto, who defended Estrada in his impeachment trial and who campaigned mightily for the opposition candidate against Gloria Arroyo in 2004, doing in the Team Unity line-up of Gloria’s handpicked senatorial candidates?

What I actually find so distressing is the reality of what the true intentions of these candidates why they shifted under the administration. Is it because of principle base or under pressure? Well whatever that maybe I just hope that people will be wiser in choosing for the right leader who will help in the development of our country…
